He would fish in troubled waters who would try to trace the origin of either city, Old or New Paphos, and I leave the question as too difficult for me. I may just say that in New Paphos too was a temple of Venus, which was destroyed, together with the city, by an earthquake. St Paul, on his visit to Paphos (Acts xiii.) converted by his preaching the Roman Proconsul Sergius Paulus. Here too he adopted as his disciple and follower Titus, whom he ordained deacon in the city in which he afterwards suffered martyrdom. Pafo was the seat of a bishop under the Lusignans, and has still a Greek bishop, a suffragan of the archbishop of Nicosia.
