dimensions were seven feet and three-eights in height, three feet and one-third in length, and four inches and a quarter thick. About three feet and one-third of the stone's height was underground. . The inscription was cut on the upper part of the stone. It reads as follows:—

This, in Latin, is equivalent to "Imperatori Nervǽ Trajano Cǽsari Augusto Germanico Dacico." After taking the exact dimensions of the stone, I gave instructions to have the upper part, containing the inscription, sawn off, and preserved from injury. At a distance of four inches below the last line of the inscription, there were two square holes in a horizontal line, each having the depth of a quarter of an inch, and the diameter of about one inch. In one of these holes there was a leaf of lead much corroded. From the position of this stone, and of the inscription upon it, I am led to conjecture that it was originally used for posting up edicts sent from Rome for publication, or the public acts of the Consul of the locality.
